History of International Yoga Day: The origins of the proposal to celebrate World Yoga Day were laid in 2001 when a yoga conference was held in Portuguese. Then on June 21, 2008, the first 'World Yoga Day' was celebrated. This was followed by a conference called 'Yoga - Science for World Peace' held in Bengaluru on December 6 and 7, 2011, which discussed in detail the celebration of Yoga Day at the international level. For the first time in history, yoga gurus from all over the world floated the idea that there should be an international day for yoga.
June 21 is the longest day: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the UN General Assembly in 2014, said that this is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. United Nations Resolution: On December 11, 2016, the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 7/121 to celebrate June 21 as 'International Yoga Day'. The resolution was introduced by India and endorsed by 12 of the 15 member states of the United Nations. At the UN General Assembly, there were 12 countries that sub-supported the resolution, the largest ever. Since then, International Yoga Day has been celebrated all over the world since 2014.
Commencement of International Yoga Day Celebrations: On June 21, 2016, the first International Yoga Day was celebrated in various cities of many countries of the world. The main event was held in Delhi, the national capital of India. A special event was organized at Rajpath in Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself was present. Along with him, a total of 4.5 people, including representatives from 6 different countries, did various yogasanas for 5 minutes. The world record for doing yoga was set by such a large number of people at once.
