Iceland residents are mourning the loss of their glacier. A group of ministers, led by Prime Minister Katerin Jakobsdottir, also paid tribute to the Glacier. Okjokul is the first glacier to be officially declared dead. It is expected that all the world's major glaciers will end in the next 200 years. "This time it is time to acknowledge what is happening right now," a message announced by the Prime Minister said. We also know what needs to be done to prevent this situation.
Bronze leaflets were unveiled in mourning of the glacier, depicting its current state, as well as warning about the future of the rest of the glacier. Iceland's Prime Minister Katerin Jakobsdottir, Environment Minister Gudmundur Igni and UN Human Rights High Commissioner Mary Robinson also attended the ceremony. However, experts predicted this glacier situation in July. He said this would be the first glacier to lose its identity due to climate change.
Okjokul was also an oak volcano in the western sub-Arctic part of Iceland. For the last few years he was constantly melting and there was also a fear that he would be destroyed. The satellite image showed the images of the Glacier on September 14, 1986. The picture on the left is 1986 and the one on the right is August 1, 2019. In 1901, Okjul was spread over 38 square feet in kilometers. It has now fallen and reduced to 1 square kilometer.
Scientists say that future risks have already begun. A team of scientists has warned that 400 Iceland glaciers will be destroyed in the future in the same way. Iceland melts an estimated 11 billion tonnes of snow every year. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, if greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise so fast, more than half of the world's glaciers will melt by 2100.
