Elephanta Caves to see in India

Elephanta's Caves on Gadhpuri Island, seven kilometers from the port of Apollo, is a marvelous 7th century architecture. Elephanta has a group of seven caves on this small island with a circumference of seven kilometers. A huge statue of an elephant named Elephanta was found on the island. The Portuguese conquered the island in the 16th century and renamed it Elephanta.

The caves of Elephanta are carved from a single mountain. The cave has been built in a 200 feet high rock up to a depth of 5 meters and has beautiful sculptures and attractive designs carved on its walls. It is also difficult to imagine how this cave, built in the seventh century, would have turned out. The caves of this complex spread over 2000 square feet have various idols of Lord Shiva. The main cave is divided into three parts by sculpted columns of gatekeepers. In the main room there are idols of Lord Shankar, the largest of which is five meters high. There are also huge idols of Trimurti, Ardhanareshwar, Parvati etc. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tourists from home and abroad who come to Mumbai definitely come to see these caves.
