- Basmati exports to Europe likely to increase: Total rice exports expected to increase to 5 million tonnes
"In the case of rice, we used to rely on overseas imports years ago, but after the green revolution, domestic production of foodgrains started declining and now we are in a position to export grain," said a source in the grain market. Demand for cooked basmati rice in India has increased significantly in recent years in various countries of the world. The European Union is setting the stage for the recognition of India's Basmati as a Geographical Indication GI. The EU was in talks with Pakistan on various issues on the issue and with the deadline set for September 10, there are indications that the EU is getting GI recognition for India in Basmati as the only country. As a result, India's basmati exports from India to European countries are now expected to grow, market experts said. Meanwhile, there are signs of increasing dominance of India's rice in the world market. According to market analysts, India's share of the total global rice export market has risen to 6-8 per cent. The total export of rice from the country in the year 2016 increased by about 3 to 4 per cent in 2020 as compared to 2016 and the same trend has continued in the current year of 2021 as well.
In the past, rice exports from the country were mainly to the Middle East Gulf countries, but recently there have been indications that rice exports from the country to Bangladesh and China have also increased. Demand for long rice has also increased in the world market. Experts were hoping that rice exports from India to various countries would pick up speed as the process of reopening in these countries is now fast approaching. Some of India's rival countries used to export certain types of rice to the world market as basmati rice, but now that such pollution is declining and the importers of such rice are becoming more cautious, India's respect in the world market has increased.
The question of GI recognition is now being looked at by Pakistan in the courts of Europe. But for now, there are signs that India is on the rise. There are indications that talks have also started on the question of a free trade agreement between India and the European Union. Meanwhile, basmati prices have risen in India's grain markets. In North India, there have been signs of declining Pusa-Basmati-1905 plantings, with the recent rise in the basmati market. Such rice income has started in the mandis of Punjab and Haryana. At this time last year, the price of such rice was Rs 2,100 to Rs 200 per kg in Kiev. The new arrivals of 1181 varieties of rice in rice are about to start soon and at present the price of such (old) rice has recently gone up by Rs. In some areas in the North, there has been talk of farmers increasing the area under sugarcane and pulses instead of rice. Many farmers were also instructed to cultivate 1912 Pusa Basmati instead of 1508 rice. The 1917 type of rice was introduced in the market about five years ago and the yield per hectare is higher, experts said. Par boiled basmati prices have also gone up. The steamed rice market has also grown. Market sources said that the arrival of new goods is likely to pick up in October and prices are likely to come down. Meanwhile, exports of basmati from the country fell from 10.50 lakh to 12.5 lakh tonnes in April-June to 10.7 lakh to 10.50 lakh tonnes, attributed to high freight rates and shortage of containers, market insiders said. However the situation has changed since June. Demand for Indian rice has increased in Asia and Africa. Experts estimate that total rice exports from India are likely to increase to 3 million tonnes this year. Experts estimate that the total exports of rice from Thailand, Vietnam and Pakistan will be equal to the total exports from India alone. Vietnam itself has been importing rice from India!
