The story of Dev Diwali is as follows. After Lord Shiva's eldest son and Lord Kartikeya, the commander of the gods, killed Tarakasur, his three sons Tarakaksha, Kamalaksh and Vidyunmali, after a severe penance to appease the gods, pleased Brahmaji and asked for the blessing of immortality. Brahmaji said - 'It is not permissible to give the blessing of immortality, so ask for an imminent death.' These three brothers, known as Tripurasura, said - 'The three towns (puris) created for us, when in a row in the Abhijit Nakshatra, and without any work-anger-greed, become extremely calm, and kill us with an impossible arrow on an impossible chariot.' Brahmaji said tatastu.
Asking for such a blessing from Brahmaji, Tripurasura started torturing gods, sages and human beings. He conquered the gods and gained dominion over heaven. All the gods took refuge in Shivaji and begged him to free them from the torment of Tripurasur. Lord Shiva learned about the boon given by Brahmaji. He made the impossible chariot of the earth, in which the sun and the moon became its two wheels. Lord Vishnu is also an arrow, Vasuki is also a snake bow and Meru became a mountain bow and as soon as the three cities came in a row in Abhijit Nakshatra, Lord Shiva attacked them with a calm mind without work-anger-greed mind and all three cities were burnt to ashes. All three Asuras perished. That day was Purnima of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. Tripurasura was killed so all the gods and goddesses were pleased. They all came together and came to Kashi town of Lord Shiva. He lit lamps with Ganga Pujan. He lit lamps on all the ghats of Gangaji and made Kashi shine with divine light.
