Year 1967. A fruit merchant named Eugene Pottenger in DeKalb County, USA was lifting heavy boxes of fruit like every day. All of a sudden he started sweating, shortness of breath and severe chest pain. He was immediately taken to the doctor. After conducting various types of tests, the doctor told Eugene Pottenger's wife that, 'Eugene has a blockage in his heart and as there is no cure for it, he can live for a maximum of 3 months. ' On hearing this, Mrs. Eugene's head collapsed. On the advice of friends, he decided to get a second opinion. This doctor studied Eugene and his case paper meticulously for 1 hour after which he confidently told Mrs. Eugene, 'I have a new method of treatment with which I can cure her completely. Of course, since this treatment has not yet been performed on anyone, there will be a great risk to life during the surgery. His wife agreed to this new type of surgery, thinking that if you are trapped in the middle of the sea and can bring a spark to the shore and there is confidence in the doctor's voice then what is wrong with giving him a chance. The doctor performed this new type of surgery and Eugene Pottenger lived a healthy life not for 3 months but for more than 20 years.
This new type of surgery performed in 1967 is called Coronary Artery Bypass Graft and we call it as Bypass Surgery for short. In general terms, a bypass is a major surgery, in which an artery or vein is taken from another part of our body. With the help of which the required blood supply can be delivered to the heart muscle. These blood vessels on the surface of the heart are connected to the posterior part of the coronary artery. through which the blood begins to flow in this new pathway. Removing this vein from that part of the body does not cause any harm.
René Favalero of Argentina is the doctor who officially discovered this type of bypass surgery and brought life-saving herbs to many people's lives. He was born on 14 July 1923 in La Plata, Argentina in a normal family. From the very beginning, he became a doctor after receiving a study family and one scholarship after another. After becoming a doctor, he was assigned the duty of a doctor in La Pampa, an inland village in Argentina. As the condition of the family was normal, he had no other option but to take up this duty. But he took up this responsibility not just as a formality but as a challenge. He has written in his autobiography that, 'Every young doctor should give the initial years of his career to the village and the poor. What they will learn there may not even be found in university medical studies. After serving in the interior for 12 years, he came to America for post-graduation. After coming to America, despite his lack of proficiency in English, Vidhan did not let his weakness prevail and he continued to gain more and more expertise in his subject. In 1967, he first documented bypass surgery and was subsequently included among America's leading physicians. He started getting offers from the hospitals asking for asking wages. But he thought, 'rather than saving the lives of the people of other countries with this surgery of mine, why not help the people of my country first.' Due to which he rejected all the greedy offers and reached home. In Argentina he founded the Favaloro Foundation. Where the poor were treated free of cost and young doctors were also trained for heart surgery. The foundation started to get into debt without getting any support from the Argentine government. Due to which he ended his life on 29th July 2000 at the age of 77 by shooting himself. He wrote in his suicide note, 'I am taking this step because I am tired of being repeatedly raised as a beggar in my own country. '
It is no exaggeration to say that a reference book on heart surgery is incomplete without Rene Favalero. Because, today, despite the blockage, one can live a normal life through bypass, the credit goes to Rene Favalero. By the way, the first bypass doctor from India is K.M. Cherian. He performed bypass surgery for the first time in India in 1975.
Dr. Sherwitz and Powell noted in their study of heart disease,
'People who were too wrapped up in themselves. Those whose self-talk was frequent had a higher risk of heart attack. On the contrary, human-human love, connection with nature, emotional connection with animals and trees provide protection against heart disease.' Thinker John Lennon's famous quote is, 'Life is what happens to you when you're making tough plans.'
"After the heart attack, I realized that life can end at any time, two minutes or minutes later. It should be understood in direct and clear language that I can die anytime and therefore priorities have to change. The money I use is mine. What I save is not mine. To do all that is left to be done in life. Let's not hurt our friends by talking loud....Life or death is a matter of luck but the chip of the saucer is broken or a little cracked goes on for so long that we get bored. A new saucer may break suddenly. Even the chip of a man's heart is like a broken saucer....'
