Obesity reduction surgery in India increased by 100-fold

New Delhi, Aug 22, 2019, Thursday

Obesity Surgery Society of India has reported a 100-fold increase in obesity surgery in India in the last fifteen years. In 2004, there were 400 surgeries across the country. Today the number has increased to twenty thousand in 2019. Previously, there were only eight surgeons with specialties for this surgery. Today, more than 450 surgeons perform such surgeries.

It would also be interesting to know which state has the most fat people. The number of surgery to reduce obesity in the states of New Delhi, Punjab, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu has increased drastically.

This operation, known as bariatric surgery, involves cutting off some part of the abdomen and waist. The only consolation, though, is that we get less surgery than we do in the United States. One million people underwent such surgery last year in the United States.

Dr. Arun Prasad, president of the Obesity Surgery Society of India, will present his survey report about this at an international conference to be held in Spain next month.
