Before the news came that Kareena Kapoor was going to be a mother again recently, the actress was working with about 100 Indian fashion designers for the welfare of our handicraftsmen. Kareena Kapoor-Khan was also with the Indian designers in a fundraising campaign for our handicraftsmen who were in dire straits during the Kovid period.
The actress says that we are all going through a very difficult time right now. We want to not only financially support our artisans through this campaign, but also give them the credit and prestige they deserve. We have no idea how many days or months these artisans have worked to weave the sari or dress we buy in the showroom.
The irony, however, is that our artists wear expensive western costumes from well-known brands that look glamorous. Kareena is no exception. Yet he has come forward to help our artisans. "Times have changed and we are moving towards a long lasting fashion," she said.
In fact, artists tend to choose their own clothing under a certain kind of pressure. Only gowns are worn on the red carpet, the one with the widest gown is more glamorous, etc. But I think this is wrong.
What a big change Vidya Balan decided to wear a sari at the Cannes Film Festival. Sari is our national costume. I also like wearing sari very much. In fact in our country, we should be proud of what our artisans make. I find it silly to wear a gown on the red carpet.
However, most of the time the decision to wear a gown is made under the pressure of a stylist. Most of the artists wear costumes by designers from New York and Paris. But I hope that after this sudden change of time, we will give importance only to Indian creations.
Usually artists do not wear a single dress or sari etc. a second time. In such a situation it is difficult to imagine that they would wear their outfits frequently. However Kareena believes that this currency has also started and continues under certain pressure. But now in the changed times this trend also has to change. There is nothing wrong with recycling or reusing your clothing. If you have bought an expensive sari, why not just wear it once? Why not wear it often?
Designers sell saris bought from our handicraftsmen at exorbitant prices with their own labels at exorbitant prices.
Kareena also admits that hundreds of sari and other costume materials bought from artisans are sold in thousands and artisans do not even get credit for their creations. In fact, our artisans do not get the value they deserve. They sell their woven fabrics, saris, etc. for a nominal price and have to support their entire family from them.
But after the initiative we have taken, they will be rewarded, their work will be appreciated and they will also get financial benefits. Through this initiative we have tried to bridge the huge gap between the price offered to them and the selling price. When a designer walks on the ramp to showcase his art and people also appreciate it, the weaver who weaves the fabric of his garment, the weaver of the sari worn by the models of those designers who walk on the ramp should also be applauded.
