The world's largest seeded fruit: Cocoa de Mer


Tall coconut, palm and arecanut trees can be seen along the coast. Coconut and date palms are found on the beaches of the world. This salt water plant bears salty fruit. There are many variations. Cocoa de Mer, a coconut-like tree on the islands of the Maldives, bears a large fruit made up of two large coconuts. The seed of this fruit is the largest in the world.

Coco de Mer is a special tree. The tree is 5 to 20 meters high. Its leaves are seven meters long. It has one meter long flower. This demon-sized tree bears fruit in six to seven years. It takes two years for this fruit to ripen and grow. Cocoa de Mer ripens in two years and becomes a huge fruit weighing 15 to 20 kg. An elliptical 20 to 30 cm long cocoon-like fruit has three or four seeds on it. They are also large in size. The fruits of Coco de Mer are floating in the sea water. First spotted by some sailors in 18 AD. Many legends are woven around this fruit. The sailors also called it the fruit of Satan.
