- In my opinion a film succeeds only when it can appeal on an emotional level. I believe that Indian audiences give an emotional response to films, be it laughter or romance. That's what we did in 'Avatar', putting emotion first.'
'Avatar', the latest sequel to one of the most successful films in the history of cinema, 'Avatar: The Way of Water' is creating new records. The makers of 'Avatar' have taken 13 years to make this sequel. The main reason was that director James Cameron was developing advanced technology that could capture motion underwater. He wanted to show on the screen the entire creation of marine species living in the sea.
In the sequel, the protagonists have now become parents of five children. He has learned the skill of sustaining himself underwater. The actors were given rigorous training during the shooting. Kate Winslet broke Tom Cruise's record by holding her breath underwater for 7 minutes and 12 seconds.
Admittedly, Jon Landau, the film's producer, has managed to get everything right. The world has changed a lot since the first 'Avatar'. They believe that this is the right time to release a sequel to this film.
OTT has invaded, but John believes it's not just that people don't like going to the theatre. "There is a need to provide content that makes them come out of the house and spend money to watch the film in theatres. They can no longer be offered the same content they get on their phones and TVs at home. We have to give them something new and different. This was our goal from day one. Not only the visuals, but also the emotional level should be innovative. In my opinion a film succeeds only when it appeals on an emotional level. I believe that Indian audiences give an emotional response to films, be it laughter or romance. That's what we did in 'Avatar', putting emotion first.'
Regarding the delay in the 'Avatar' sequel, he says, 'We had to give our best and that's why it got delayed. Earlier, 'Titanic' was released in 1997, while the first part of 'Avatar' series was released in 2009. Similarly, the sequel of 'Avatar' also took 13 years. We make films for the audience and that is why we have released them in many languages in India. We know the diversity of India. Diversity has been celebrated in 'Avatar'!
Landau believes that the current environmental crisis has also increased the importance of avatar. We have tried to take this opportunity to entertain people in terms of environment as well as culture. This is why I believe the film has come out at the right time. You cannot run away from reality. That is why when you can entertain the audience by making them aware of reality, you are said to be successful.'
Landau informs that there are plans to make several sequels to 'Avatar'. A lot of work on 'Avatar 3, 4, P' has already been done. These sequels are not just making for the sake of making. We are continuing a saga. I see each sequel as a different film. Each film has a unique conclusion to the story, each with its own unique emotional appeal.'
