Mahakal, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, is famous worldwide for his Bhasma Aarti. There is a huge crowd of devotees during Mahashivratri and Shravan Mass. Bhakti Aarti and makeup are very famous in Mahakal.

Here devotees come from far and wide to see. Bhasam Aarti occurs every four hours. But twice a year this aarti happens 12 hours in the afternoon. On this day, millions of devotees come to visit Mahakal.

Shiva wedding ceremony begins before Mahashivratri festival. During these nine days, Mahakal is made differently. This makeup is decorated with God as the bridegroom.

Then on the night of Shivratri, Mahakal worship and Bhajan kirtan are performed. At this time God is wearing a crown made of quartz flowers.

Mahakal is crowned with a flower and fruit crown, gold rings, umbrellas, peacocks, and a tripod of gold. After the completion of the marriage ceremony, Bhasam Aarti takes place at 12 noon.

A similar ritual is performed with Mahakal the next day. The next day, Mahakal is bathed with milk, curd, panchamrit, sandalwood, perfume and saffron. After that the Bhasmarati is started.
