The ancient and magnificent fort of Golconda


Among the ancient forts in India, Golconda Fort is a symbol of prosperity and grandeur. In the vault of this fort in Golconda, Karnataka, diamonds like world famous Kohinoor, sea light and heap diamond are kept.

Golconda means round hill. The fort is also built on a circular hill. The fort was built in the 14th century during the reign of Qutb Shah during the Mughal period.

The fort of Golconda was originally built by Rani Rudramadevi of the Kakaria dynasty. The sultan of Bahm reshaped it after the Mughals captured it. There is a 10 km long wall around the fort. The complex has a total of four forts. The wall has eight doors and 4 towers. Golconda’s engineering is spectacular.

Its Fateh Darwaza is the largest. If you stand in the main room of the fort and clap, its echoes can be clearly heard in the hall of another fort one kilometer away. The gates of the fort, the domes, the minarets are all magnificently carved. The monastery in the fort is worth seeing. There is a secret basement in this fort which is believed to reach up to four minarets. The fort also has Durbar Hall, Nagina Bagh, Baths, Camel Stables, Taramati Mosque, Negro Arch etc.
