The holy shrine of Rameshwaram is one of the four dhams of the Hindus where the established Shivling is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Its specialty is that it is worshiped by saying that it is established by Lord Shriram, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Jeth Sud Dasham is called Rameshwar Pratishtha Din. In India, Kashi is as important in the north as Rameshwaram is in the south. Rameshwaram Shrine is located about four hundred and fifty miles south-east of Chennai. It is a beautiful cone-shaped island surrounded by the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal.
When Rakshasaraja kidnapped Ravana Sitaji and took him to Lanka, Lord Rama tried to bring him back by sending messages through Hanumanji, Angad etc. but Ravana did not believe him. So he decided to go to war with her. For this, Lord Shriram wanted to cross the sea with the monkey army. There is unity between Hari and Har. If Hari burns Har, then Har burns Hari. That is why Lord Shriram, the incarnation of Hari, started worshiping Har, that is, to get the blessings of Lord Shiva. For that he built a Shivling with his own hands from the sand of the sea. At the same time Lord Shiva manifested himself as Jyoti and became absorbed in it. He named this Shivling Rameshwaram.
After the unique battle of Rama and Ravana on earth, Ravana was killed by Lord Rama. Ravana was not an ordinary demon. He was a descendant of Maharshi Pulastya, a learned Brahmin of the Vedas and a great devotee of Shivaji. Lord Shriram regretted that he had to be killed. To atone for the sin of Brahmahatya, Lord Rama went to Rameshwaram and worshiped Shivaji. After establishing the Shivling, he asked Hanumanji to bring a Shivling from Kashi to give this linga the same recognition as Kashi Vishwanath. Pawan Sut Hanuman rushed to the sky and brought a Shivling. Lord Shriram also established that Shivling next to Rameshwar Jyotirlinga. This small Shivling is also called Ramnath. Both these Shivlings are still worshiped in the main temple of this shrine. This is the main Shivling Jyotirlinga.
There is another legend in the Puranas. When Lord Shriram was returning after conquering Lanka, he rested on the Gandhamadan mountain. There the sages and sages told Shriram that the sin of killing Brahman on them could be removed only by worshiping Shivling. There was no Shiva temple on the whole island so Lord Shriram asked Hanumanji to go to Mount Kailash and bring Shivling from Shivaji. Hanumanji reached there immediately but Lord Shivaji did not appear there either. So Hanumanji began to meditate on him with penance to reveal them. Lord Shivaji gave a Shivling with his Ashish. Hanumanji took it and returned. But by then it was too late. Fearing that the moment of prestige would come out, Mother Sita ceremoniously made a Shivling out of sand and handed it over to Shriram. Shriram established it at the right moment.
When Hanumanji reached there, he saw that the Shivling had been installed. They felt wronged by this. Hanumanji said - 'Uproot this Shivling that I have established so that I can establish the Shivling that you have brought here.' Hanumanji made several attempts to uproot it but was unsuccessful. Exhausted by these efforts, he fainted and fell on Gandhamadan. When he came to, he realized his mistake. Then Lord Shriram also installed the Shivling brought by Hanuman nearby and named it 'Hanumadishwar'.
It is believed that a person who pours Ganga water on Rameshwaram's Jyotirlinga with full faith attains Moksha. Lord Shriram also worshiped this Jyotirlinga to get rid of the sin of Brahmahatya and got rid of it so by worshiping this one gets rid of any sin. There is also a belief that dipping in the water of this shrine cures many diseases. The water of the wells there was revealed by Lord Shriram by shooting an arrow. Shri Ram established the temple of Navagraha at this place. The bridge dam started from here. It is also believed that Maa Durga killed Mahishasur in Rameshwaram.
