- Adya Shankaracharya has addressed Gangamaiya as follows - 'O Jahnutanaye! You are Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh in the form of a man. In female form you are Uma, Rama and Saraswati. O Most Aishwarya! You are formless, divine and immeasurably glorious. You are flowing on this earth in the form of water to remove the anguish of the people. '
In the Gita, Lord Krishna mentions many of his virtues and says - 'I am Ganga in the rivers.' 'Ganga' is the best of all the rivers, adorned with many adjectives like Punyasalila, Tripathaga, Patit Pavankari, Suranadi flowing in the lotus feet of Lord Vishnu, incarnated from Brahmaji's Kamandala, falling down from Mahadev Shankar's jata, flowing for the welfare of people on earth. Ganga is called Dussehra. As stated in the Skanda Purana - stealing, committing violence, adultery are the three sins committed by the body. Lying, blasphemy, blasphemy and vain nonsense are the four sins of speech. Desiring the wealth of others, thinking evil and insisting on wrong are the three sins of the mind. Ganga defeats these ten sins hence it is called 'Dussehra'.

Devotee poet Jagannath, who has earned the title of 'Panditraj' for his excellent creation in Sanskrit literature, has sung the praises of the Ganges in a heartfelt poem called 'Gangalahari'. Accordingly, Ganga is the river of nectar. The water is the good fortune of the earth. Mahadev has Aishwarya. The Vedas have everything and the gods have virtue. The sight of its flow is very sacred. If one eye of a poor man falls on the flow of the Ganges, his poverty is removed. Kamijan also becomes sinless. Remembering the word Ganga is 'psychotic' meaning calming the mind. Its song is soothing. It is said that such a rare Vishnupada is obtained not by charity, meditation, yajna or tapa but by the grace of Ganga. He is the Savior of the blind, the deaf, the dumb, the lame, the deaf, and the destitute. Special merit is obtained from remembrance, darshan, bath, achaman and pujan of Ganga. It destroys sins and sanctifies man. The Ganges is considered liberating. It is customary to put one or two teaspoons of Ganga water in a person's mouth at the end of life.
Ganga is the meeting place of all religions. Is an excellent pilgrimage. There is a pure garment of three worlds. He fulfills the desires of all by flowing in the form of Mandakini in heaven, Bhagi on earth and suffering in the abyss. Even the tilak of the clay of the Ganges removes the darkness of ignorance. The easy way to heaven is in the remembrance of the Ganges. In the Puranas there is a picture of an imaginary idol of Ganga. Accordingly, the mouth of the Ganges is similar to the moon. The crescent is developing in its crown. His four arms are seen in the postures of Ghada, Kamal, Vardan and Abhay respectively. The sacred garments and ornaments of the Ganges are like streams of nectar. The crocodile is his vehicle. Such an idol of Ganga protects those who are burnt in worldly fire. Namaskar, namaskar, sada naman ho to Brahmaswarup Ganga.
The glory of Gangamaiya is unconventional but sadly people keep on polluting it. It is the responsibility of all of us to be committed to freeing Gangamaiya, the protector of our culture and civilization, from pollution. Sujnoshu ki bahuna?
