Milnadu is known as the city of Madurai temples. The Meenakshi Temple, the largest of the numerous temples located there, is of historical significance and world famous. Located in the middle of Madurai on the banks of the Waigai River, this temple is called the Meenakshi Sundareshwar Temple. Built in the 6th century, the temple was looted and destroyed by the Mughals and rebuilt in the 16th century. What we see today is a huge complex built in the 19th century.
The temple complex is divided into four sections. The temple is spread over 12 acres with four large entrances in the outer wall. The temple has 12 skyscrapers. The tallest gopuram is 150 feet. The four gopurams are nine storeys high. Two small gopurams are gilded. The gopuram is beautifully carved and colorful.
The complex has a 20 meter long and 5 meter wide lake in which a replica of a golden lotus is striking. The 6 pillars of the sanctum sanctorum of the temple are attractive. The complex has numerous temples, large and small. The temple complex is full of sculptures and paintings. Is a tourist attraction.
