Hundreds of sweets are readily available in the market today. The sweets that are beautifully decorated and put in the box make you want to eat as soon as you see them. However, on any auspicious occasion, the first thing we hear is ladwa or ladu, whether it is churma ladu, bundi ladu, copra ladu or methi. The main reason for this is that Ladwa is our traditional dessert. And they were found not for hundreds, but for thousands of years. This is why research on it revealed that these ladu were made from different types of grains (wheat, mug, chickpeas), ghee and oilseeds. This research has proved that such ladwa, which is full of protein, was also eaten during the Harappan period. This literally meant that farming would have been very well done at that time.
Importantly, a bull statue and a copper ax were also found along with the ladu during the excavations, suggesting that the ladu may have been offered to the Lord during religious festivals even in those days. Archaeological is prevalent.
You will be surprised to know that it has now been scientifically proven by the Archaeological Survey of India. The study was jointly conducted by the Birbal Sahni Institute of Paleoscience-Lucknow and the Archaeological Survey of India. The study found seven large ladu during excavations at the Harappan site in Anupgarh district in western Rajasthan. Rajesh Agnihotri, a researcher at the Birbal Sahni Institute of Polyscience, said that the 8-year-old ladwa, which was found during excavations between 2013 and 2017, was found in a very well-preserved Survey of India director Sanjay Munjal. From this it can be said that even at that time these ladvas would have been made for the ritual of pindana on the banks of the river.
It is also to be noted here that Sushruta, the father of Indian surgery and medicine, has also mentioned Ladwa. He used sesame ladu as an antiseptic in the 4th century BC, that is, 200 years before today. He also sang the glory of glue ladu. Thus, there is no doubt that our popular dessert ladu is thousands of years old.
Most of the people in our country prefer to make their own ladu at home. Of course, even though there are various types of laddu available in sweet shops, people prefer pure desi ghee laddu made at home. Laddu is made in different ways in different parts of the country using ingredients like wheat flour, chickpea flour, jaggery, ghee, poppy. Fenugreek pampering is considered best in winter season. In this season, in addition to fenugreek ladu, ladu made with ginger also boosts the immune system and keeps the body warm. Ginger and fenugreek cure colds, coughs, fevers and sore throats. Thus it also serves as a medicine in these seasonal ailments in winter. Importantly, ginger pampering does not only help diabetics, but also helps to regulate blood sugar. In addition, poppy seeds applied on pampering fight against sugar spikes.
Even in the modern age, ghee-gol is not available as in the past. Yet the fact remains that ladu, which dates back to antiquity, is many times more nutritious than other fancy desserts.
