Social media rocking the careers of TV actors

- New trend of web casting: You will get work only if you have more followers

Previously social media was an important platform for artists to show their personality. This allowed them to stay in touch with their fans. But now what kind of project an artist will get depends on his fan following. This method was popular for web shows but has now entered the world of TV.

A few months ago, Mauli Ganguly clarified that he had lost an important serial on TV due to low followers on social media. Balika Vadhu starrer Asia Kazi also lamented that although the producers liked her audition, she was not selected due to her low fan base on social media.

Like these two artists, other artists have also expressed their opposition to this new trend. Nia Sharma herself did not have such an experience but she opposed the new trend, saying that it was insulting for a senior actor like Mauli to have to leave the role due to having fewer followers. The show has seemed a bit unfocused in recent episodes, however, when it comes to social media. The notion that TV shows get good ratings with more followers on social media is absurd.

However the senior producers categorically deny that there is such a thing in the TV field. The producer of a well-known show said that I would not choose an actress like Katrina Kaif if she does not fit in my serial. We have hundreds of artists come in every day and say they have millions of followers but TV viewers are not your social media followers. You may be well known on social media but viewers will not like you if your acting is not good or the role is not right for you. He gave examples of many serials in which the actresses were brand new but became popular because the role fit them off and their performance was good.

Many producers agree, although casting directors are divided. Some casting directors admit that such a trend is becoming more and more prevalent, while others say that the opinion expressed by the cast is erroneous.

A casting director of TV and web films admitted that such a trend is going on at present but TV actors believe it has not become so prevalent. There are some new producers in the field who do not have faith in their project and so they prefer artists with a large following class. They don’t check the risk so they check the artist’s social media account. However, experienced senior producers select artists based on auditions and skills.

However some casting directors do not agree with this opinion. He categorically denies that any artist is selected based solely on the number of his fans. According to him, the artists use social media as an excuse to disagree with the producers of the show and the show is not popular. Nowadays, there is no precedent for any major actor in the field of TV to achieve this feat due to social media.

According to senior TV actors, times are changing fast and must be accepted. Social media is a reality in today's world and it has to be accepted. What's wrong with filmmakers wanting online support for their TV shows? If they want a popular face with a huge fan following, we have to accept such a reality.

Artists who do not have a large fan base on social media are outraged by such a trend. Many artists have complained that they were selected after their auditions but were dropped at the last minute due to lack of fans on social media.

Artists complain that such followers can be bought even if it is appropriate to have fan following on social media. This means that you have to spend money to get selected in the show. Also social media fan following is a bogus belief because it can happen that an artist can be a star on social media but no one even knows him in real life. Moreover, according to some artists, social media is just an excuse to force new artists to work on a low budget.
