Indian Botanist: Dr.J. J. Chinoy

Botany is an important study for development in the field of agriculture. Many botanists of the world have contributed to the research and development of new varieties of grains etc. used as food for man. At the forefront is the name of Dr. Chinoy of India. They have made an unprecedented contribution to the development of disease-free plants in low water during droughts.

Dr. Jamshedji Jijibhai Chinoy was born on 15th February, 1908 in Bhuj village of Gujarat. He studied at Mumbai University and obtained his B.Sc. degree in Botany in 19th. Jamshedji, the first graduate in the upper class, received government scholarships and fellowships.

The Indian government sent him to Britain for further research. After studying at the Imperial College at the University of London, he came to India and joined the Central Cotton Committee of India as a scientist.

He joined the Indian Institute of Agricultural Research as a scientist in 181. The country became independent and he joined Gujarat University as Professor of Botany. He has authored over 200 research papers in botany and has been world renowned for his agricultural guidance in countries including Britain, Holland, France and Germany.

Dr. Chinoy was a diligent and disciplined scientist. They never got angry and became popular due to Mudu nature. He guided many students as professors and his disciples became leading scientists.

He has made outstanding contributions to cellular and merculic biology. He served as an ideal professor throughout his life. He died on March 19, 1918.
