The ancient Chennakeshwa temple of Belur


The Chennakeshwa Temple in Belur, Hassan District, Karnataka is an ancient UNESCO World Heritage Site. Chennakeshwa means 'beautiful Keshav'. Built by King Vishuvavardhana in 1112. The main Vishnu is worshiped in this Hoishaba style architectural temple of the South. 1007 meters long and as wide as this temple is a treasure trove of sculpture and architecture. Its main hall is the center of attraction. There are huge sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses all around. There is a sanctum sanctorum of 108 meters behind the mandap. The whole wall is made up of a pair of columns. The temple has about 50 huge sculptures. It includes various incarnations of Vishnu besides Lord Krishna. The main statue of Keshav is 12 feet high. The outer wall of the temple has about 200 elephant sculptures at the bottom and lion sculptures at the top.

Chennakeshwa Temple is located near the famous Gomteshwar in Belur. Tourists visiting Karnataka visit this temple.
