Thanjavur was an ancient kingdom of the seventh century. Thanjavur Palace, built by the Maratha rulers in AD 1550, is worth seeing with its six-storied tower and Durbar Hall. The Durbar Hall is known for its epic paintings on the walls of the Ramayana and its grand corridors. From the top of the measuring tower one can see far. The palace today houses a library, museum and art gallery. The museum exhibits the costumes, weapons and tiaras of the erstwhile royals. In it, the complete Ramayana written on palm leaves is worth seeing. Manuscripts written on palm leaves are found only here in the library. The Durbar Hall has hexagonal pillars. There are sculptures and paintings of various deities on the walls and ceilings. Colors are abundantly used in the decoration of the Durbar Hall. This palace is a center of attraction for tourists visiting Tamil Nadu.
