Brighter lights with higher capacity are required to illuminate the roads of big cities during the night. Mostly sodium light emitting yellow light is used for this. There is science behind choosing yellow light instead of the attractive white light of mercury, tubelight and halogen.
When white light passes through some medium, it splits into seven colors and appears as colorful rings. This process is more visible when there are rain showers in the atmosphere and traffic is hampered. The yellow light of sodium light spreads uniformly and does not refract. The capacity of sodium light is also higher. A 1 watt sodium light gives more light than a 1 watt tube. The same goes for keeping the headlights of cars and other vehicles flashing yellow.
