- Understanding the child's mind, understanding the feelings, listening calmly and encouraging them - are all important
Sriram V., who left a lucrative job in the corporate sector to become a social entrepreneur. Iyer is counted among the top fifty social entrepreneurs of India today. 64-year-old Sriram was born in a happy family in Chennai. His father wanted him to study CA, but Sriram was not interested in it, so he pursued a masters degree in advertising. Got a good paying job in customer relationship management software and also got a golden opportunity to travel to many countries of the world. Also worked as a director for some time in Amsterdam. He came to Mumbai in May 2002 and happened to come to Vadodara for a few days, at that time Godhra incident was covered in newspaper news. All those incidents had a deep impact on Sriram's mind.
An incident in 2003 brought a radical change in his life. One day a meeting was going on with a client from Australia in the Chennai office. At that time a twelve-thirteen year old child came to his office. Seeing him, his first question was whether there was a security guard outside or not. But his friend calmed him down and asked why the child had come, only to find out that he had come to sell incense sticks. Twenty km from Chennai. This Vinod, who lives far away, used to study in school during the day. His father was not alive and his mother and sisters wove incense sticks. After completing his schooling, he used to earn his livelihood by selling incense sticks. Seeing Vinod's struggle, Shriram's heart was filled with pain. He thought that even in such a situation there is a strong desire to study! If a mentor is found, his talent will emerge. He thought that if there are many such children, if we make a bridge by connecting them with people working in the corporate sector or other places, then the disparity between the rich and the poor in the society will be reduced and the children will get adequate education.
Sriram Iyer's mind had long been imprinted with the scenes of Godhra Kanda and Tsunami. In such a state of mind, this incident made him think. After resigning from his job, he formed a development center in Chennai. In which there were only six children. There was little experience in this field and not much money. Also, due to his decision, the girl with whom he was to be married also refused to marry, but he continued his campaign. Tried to know the minds of children. He observed that our current education system is boring to children. If the behavior of the teachers is not liked, sometimes the parents take the child out of school and make him work, so that he can earn some income. Labour, Violence, HIV Also, he established the 'Nalandave Foundation' for the purpose of providing education and guidance to the needy children trapped in human trafficking.
The Nalandave model is inspired by Nalanda University. Children between the ages of three and seventeen years are planned to be educated and their entire personality developed by the mentor. Teachers, Child Psychologist, Neuro Psychiatrist, Montessori Teaching Method and most importantly harmony between children and parents are taken care of. They take the mentor by checking. Mentors act as unselected volunteers and then become mentors as they develop skills. Those selected as mentors have to work for at least one year after joining and devote one hour a week to the child and family. Parents also have to fill a consent form for this. Six months are important for building trust. Understanding the child's mind, understanding the feelings, listening calmly and encouraging them - all these are important.
At Nalandave Foundation the emphasis is mostly on 'Achievement through Art'. Since the subject of history does not seem dry to children, it should be taught through drama. Sriram Iyer has made the arts a medium for education and skill development. Angol city in Andhra is known for child trafficking. His 47 children were trained in folk art and theatre. Since 2008, these children have presented their art in many places. Under 'Bihar Children's Radio Project' sixty girls from four districts were trained in screenwriting, reporting and interviewing. It was broadcast from Patna Akashvani for sixty weeks. A recipient of the World Bank Development Marketplace Award and several other prestigious awards, Shriram Iyer today through his foundation teaches theater, dance, music, photography, storytelling and screenwriting to millions of children in Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Jammu-Kashmir and yes, incense sellers.
