Risk of stroke while shampooing in beauty parlour...

A hair wash session at a beauty parlor sounds like an ideal way to unwind after a busy week, but a recent visit to the salon almost turned fatal for a fifty-year-old woman from Hyderabad.

The incident came to light when the woman's treating doctor tweeted about the details of the incident, saying that when the woman turned back to wash her neck, a vital vein supplying blood to her brain was compressed, leading to a stroke. This condition is also known as beauty parlor stroke syndrome or neck hyperextension. The doctor further tweeted that he examined a 50-year-old woman who developed symptoms of dizziness, nausea and vomiting after shampooing her hair at a beauty parlour. She was initially referred to a gastroenterologist who treated her symptoms. There was no significant improvement in symptoms, but the next day his balance was mildly impaired while walking. She came to me for examination. An MRI of his brain revealed that the vein supplying the brain had narrowed, reducing the blood supply to the brain.

According to neurologists, neck hyperextension is a rare condition that occurs in some people when the neck is bent back for massage or while shampooing the hair. As this mostly happens in beauty parlors, it is also known as beauty parlor syndrome. It is also known as hyperextension of the neck as the neck is bent back to an excessive extent. When the neck is bent back and held for long periods of time and the slightest jolt or pressure is applied to the head or neck, the vein that supplies blood to the brain constricts, reducing the blood supply to the brain and depriving the brain of oxygen, which can lead to a stroke. .

Other factors include neck massage and sudden application of cold water to the head and neck area can also increase the constriction of the veins that supply blood to our brain.

In extremely rare cases, rupture or severing of blood clot-forming arteries at the base of the skull can cause a major stroke.

Although such an incident happens occasionally, doctors have advised caution. Experts advise that there is no need to worry about this, but people, especially the elderly, should instruct the shampooer or scalp massager to be gentle. They should also take care not to put too much pressure on the head.

Also, it has been advised that if there is even a slight pain in the head after massage or shampoo, the doctors should be contacted immediately. Especially those who have diseases like blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol are more likely to have a stroke. According to experts, an unfit person can have a stroke by getting shampoo, massage or hair transplant, chin lifting and any cosmetic treatment. Doctors advise that their staff should be trained, especially when doing shampoos or massages in salons. If the customer has hypertension or any other illness, he should inform the salon and refrain from taking any service that may affect his health.

Those who want to get shampooed in the salon should not bend the neck more than 20 degrees. Also, a round towel should be kept under the neck during shampooing so that the neck does not get jerked during shampooing.
