- 'Life really begins at 60 years. There is a Mount Everest in all of us, which we have to climb.'
Be it at the end of the year or at the beginning of the new year, every professional person reviews his career. Anupam Kher, who has done 532 films in four decades in the film industry, is not excluded from it. The 67-year-old versatile actor firmly believes that 2022 is shaping up to be the most successful year of his career. The word 'successful' can be underlined in his statement. Explaining the logic behind his opinion, he says, 'Everyone knows that I have survived in the film industry for 38 years because of my talent and the varied roles I have played. But this year, at least for me, has proved that box-office has become a bigger barometer for an actor than his acting and performance. Now you are judged by how successful your film is at the box-office. The biggest satisfaction and joy for me is that my unconventional, unconventional films have also been successful. It was by no means a typical commercial film. Be it 'The Kashmir Files', 'Elevation' or 'Kartikeya-2' (Telugu).'
In an interview, Anupam was asked that 'The Kashmir Files', made on a very small budget, became one of the highest-grossing films of 2022. Will you give credit to the viewers? Answering in the affirmative, Kashmiri Pandit Kher says, 'We tend to underestimate the audience because of our insecurity, but in fact the audience is intelligent. A good film is either commercially successful or becomes a cult film after a few years. 'The Kashmir Files' did good business not only in India but also abroad. Despite all the protests and propaganda, the film's overseas collection was over Rs.75 crore.'
'The Kashmir Files' is going to be a special film for you as it deals with an unfortunate and tragic chapter related to your roots, isn't it? In response to such a question, the actor says very well that, 'This film is a turning point not only for me but for the entire Indian cinema. Three or four decades from now, when Indian cinema and its development are discussed, people will mention that the films before 'The Kashmir Files' and the films after it. The entire country should be proud of the cinematic brilliance of this film. Personally speaking, the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from their homeland has occupied a corner of my heart. We were all discussing it for 32 years and yet people did not believe that anything like this had happened. This film has made people aware of the fact. The story of the film is heart-wrenching, but people welcomed it wholeheartedly because of their guilt.'
Anupam's Telugu film 'Kartikeya-2' has also received rave reviews. Talking about it, the 67-year-old actor reveals a secret, 'I have only two scenes in the entire film. Before giving my first shot on the sets, I had an inspiration and I asked the director Chandu Mondeti, how would it be if I spoke my dialogues as a blind person? It was a last minute idea and yet he accepted my suggestion. Fortunately, my idea clicked. When I watched 'Kartikeya-2' in the theatre, the audience was screaming and whistling so loudly that I could not hear a single dialogue. It was a wonderful experience.' In the interview, Suraj Bajdatya's film 'Unchai' finally came out. Anupam's multistarrer has also been praised by critics and audiences. Some are of the opinion that the film is 15 years too late. The question is whether 15 years ago 'Ucchai' would have been so successful? Kher has a very firm opinion in this matter, 'This film can be played at any time. Especially since my personal philosophy matches the central idea of the film. The essence of the philosophy is that life really begins at 60 years and there is a Mount Everest in all of us, which we have to climb. We have all suffered a lot during the last two years of the pandemic. To come out of it we needed new hope, compassion, strength and dreams, which the 'height' gave us. So everyone liked the film.'
