Russell Kears: Image scanner and developer of Pixel

- Russell Kears and the first image he scanned. The image scanned in 1957 is preserved in the Portland Art Museum of America.

Find an image scanner in the App Store. There are many apps available. The Image Scanner app has been found to be very useful in making our documents more effective, more readable-clear. From the required certificates to old photos, important documents can be saved in good condition with the image scanner of the smartphone. Image scanners also have options on how to save documents and in what format.

The years of hard work of many researchers are responsible for the fact that today we can easily scan documents and use them at any time. Researchers spent hours in the lab building a base of technology that we can use with a single click by adding a feature to a smartphone. One such researcher was Russell Keyers.

Russell's parents immigrated to the United States from Russia and Hungary during World War I. His family settled in Manhattan after World War II. Russell was born in Manhattan on the 19th. He graduated from New York University in 190 and received his master's degree from Harvard University in 19. He mastered technology from MIT and immediately got an opportunity in American computer program.

In association with the American National Institute of Standards, he began research into computer technology. Around the same time, the United States launched a project to preserve the documents. Russell became its leader. There was no simple technology at that time to help preserve old documents. There was a need for a scanner to be connected to the computer.

His team, led by Russell, worked hard in that direction. The idea of building a machine that scans documents and stores images on a computer began. It was also investigated whether there was a device that scanned the images in hardcopy format and digitized them, but no such machine was found. Russell Kears began spending time in the lab creating a device that could scan documents using a laser. Xerox had been invented before, but it was only useful for print. It did not create a digital image.

Russell led the office staff during the day as well as conducting experiments with the scanner machine at night. For one and a half years, he worked in the office for 15 hours. There was a stage where all the other projects came to a standstill. He assigned the job to Kabel Assistant RB Thomson. He did not have complete success, so after a while he resumed his research. Various experiments were finally successful in the 19th.

Russell Kears developed the world's first digital scanner and scanned the first image in 18. The machine had sensors that helped keep the documents legible. Documents were scanned and digital copies were stored on the computer. The machine was so simple that the image could be scanned by pressing just two buttons. There was no time to process the image, which saved time.

It was a historic moment. Russell chose the image of his three-month-old son for the experiment. The image was placed in a scanner and made into a scanned copy of 15-16 pixels. It was the world's first digital scan image. In 2009, Life magazine published a list of 100 world-changing images that included the image.

That image was really a game changer. Russell not only built a scanner machine, but also invented pixel measurements. Russell Keyers was the first to scientifically prove where elements are in a digital picture. The invention of the pixel proved to be just as important in advancing technology.

A black and white image proved to be revolutionary for many researchers. That was the first step in the field of image scanners. There has been a lot of evolution in that area. Russell's scanner base was responsible for the revolution from digital scanners to roller scanners, 3G scanners, hand document scanners and smartphone scanners. Satellite images, barcode scanners, etc. were also credited to Russell's miraculous invention.

The mobile scanner app was launched in 2011. The American company launched an app called Scan in 2011. The same year, a Chinese company also launched the Camscanner app in the market. The era of mobile scanner started with these two apps.

Godfrey Honsfield invented the modern CT scan. Its internal structure was also based on Russell's image scanner. Godfrey won the 19th Nobel Prize in Medicine. It is a different matter that Russell did not receive any such international level or national level awards!

Russell Keyers, 61, died in Portland, Oregon this month. Russell, a computer engineer, worked as an advisor to a private company for a few years after his retirement. The basis of the numerous products associated with the scanner was the first digital scanner made by Russell, but Russell himself did not consider it such a useful thing in the beginning! Looking at the easily used scanner apps in smartphones, he once said at a later age:

‘I initially thought the scanner and pixel was a‘ bad idea ’. It was not imagined that his invention would be revolutionary, but many users today use the scanner app with the same method and seeing that this technique is being consumed in their daily life, I think the idea of the scanner was a 'good idea'.

The first image scanned from a computer-connected scanner was of a three-month-old baby. A photo of the three-month-old son of scanner developer Russell Keyers was scanned at 12 and the image size was 12 pixels.

What is a photography pixel?

In the modern world, different pixel sizes keep hitting our ears. When it comes to smartphone cameras, we first know the size of a pixel. How many pixels is the back camera? How many pixels is the front camera? The size of a pixel determines the value of a smartphone. What is this pixel? Who taught the world to measure it?

If there are more pixels then the photo is good, if there are less pixels then the result is torn! The result is determined by the dots. A screen is made up of very small dots. These tiny dots are called pixels. Pixels are also called picture elements. The word pixel is a combination of pixels and elements.

We also hear a word resolution. A resolution is determined based on pixels. Numerous pixels together form a picture. Russell Keyers was the first to discover that a picture has pixels.

The size of pixels and mega pixels is something like this: 115t2 = 10 lakh pixels = 1 mega pixel.

1200x1200 = 20 lakh pixels = 2 mega pixels.

The image that Russell Kiers measured was black and white. The color pixel consists of three colors. Red-green-blue. It is also called RGB in technical language. These colors change color as they are more or less done in the picture. The combination of these colors becomes very important especially when it comes to image printing.

The pixel arrangement measures the display in inches. Picture quality is determined by the average number of pixels per inch. We are simply measuring pixels to check the result of a mobile camera. Let's zoom in on an image in a smartphone until it happens and then the dots that start appearing are the dots of pixels. It determines the quality of the camera and the image.
