Non-violence.
This is not a word. There is a whole code. Non-violent movement is the only way to challenge the authorities or unjust laws even if there is no violence in the world - the way that Gandhiji showed the world. History has shown that many non-violent agitators in the world have succeeded in getting justice by following the path of Gandhiji.
For Gandhiji, non-violence was not a word, it was conduct. During his non-violent movement, the situation slipped out of his hands and incidents of violence were reported. The Chori-Chora incident is a well-known example of this and Gandhiji atoned for the agitation by postponing it at that time. The fact that Gandhiji never promoted incidents of violence in the non-violent movement shows that he carried the message of non-violence.
Sticking to non-violence while challenging injustice is a daunting task. It is rare for rulers to be less or less oppressive. In such a situation, it is extremely difficult for the agitators to remain non-violent. Gandhiji did that difficult task instinctively for years and was successful.
As the World Day of Non-Violence is about to be celebrated, the definition of non-violence is presented here on the basis of Gandhiji's book 'We are all children of one father'.
Non-violence is a formidable weapon
Non-violence is the dominant force of the human race. They are far more formidable than man-made weapons. Just as one has to learn to kill by committing violence, one has to learn to die by training well. In violence, there is a cure for fear, while in non-violence, fear has no place. To be free from fear, the worshiper of non-violence must cultivate a high degree of renunciation. The training of non-violence is the exact opposite of the training of violence, there is a need for violence to protect the outside, there is a need for good non-violence to protect the soul and self.
I have seen that life survives in the midst of destruction, so there must be a bigger rule than destruction. Under that rule there can be such a thing as a well-organized society, life should be livable and if it is a rule of life then it should be implemented in our daily practice as well.
Adherence to non-violence even in anger
I never get angry, but almost every time I can control my emotions. Whatever the outcome, there is always a war going on in my mind for thoughtful adherence to the rules of non-violence. As a result of such civil war man is getting stronger day by day.
I have seen that nations, like individuals, are subjected to severe tests, in no other way. Happiness comes from relieving the pain of others, not from hurting others. During the observance of truth and non-violence, I realized that there was no place for hurting opponents. The best way is to turn him away from the wrong path through silence and empathy. If the success of the non-violent movement is based on the goodwill of the bureaucrats, it is vague. It really depends on our strength.
Effective movement method
Many will say that a non-violent movement cannot take place and that such a movement has never been seen in history. But my ambition is to provide such an example. I am dreaming that my country will get independence through non-violence and I want to tell the whole world many times that I will not fight for freedom by giving up non-violence. I have not named the truth here, because the truth cannot be revealed in any other way than non-violence.
Non-violence is the most innocent and yet effective method of overcoming the diplomatic and economic injustices that are inflicted on the oppressed section of mankind. The longing for peace of many ages cannot be achieved without the virtue of non-violence.
The power of non-violence in all
Non-violence is such a power that children, young people, women and the elderly can use it in a similar way. Only in them should there be unwavering faith in God in the form of love and equal love for human beings. If non-violence is accepted as a way of life, it is manifested in every act of life.
The principle of non-violence completely forbids all forms of exploitation. My opposition to the war does not take me to such an extent that it becomes my duty to thwart the efforts of those who take part in the war. I argue with them. I suggest to them a better way and persuade them to make a choice. Cutting each other off doesn’t make a man look like a man.
Non-violence born again!
I can give nothing but a cup of love to those who come to me after giving up arms. Giving them that cup I hope to draw them closer to me. It is beyond my imagination to have eternal enmity between man and man. I have been a believer in reincarnation, so I am also hoping that if this is not born then someone else will be able to take all mankind in love.
Violence has increased worldwide today. Even in America where examples were given around the world for equality, apartheid has once again reared its head and caused frequent outbreaks of violence. The situation worsened until the UN Peace Council had to call on the US government to keep the peace.
We have seen non-violent demonstrations by protesters in Hong Kong turn violent. This is happening to the Uyghur community in China. The minority Hindus in Afghanistan-Bangladesh-Pakistan are currently being targeted. In many countries, human rights are at stake and activists fighting for their rights resort to violence during non-violent protests. It is difficult for any thinker to stand firm in the idea of non-violence or in practice.
In the midst of such incidents of violence, the rare personalities who followed Gandhiji's path have matured and continue to mature. The non-violent movement is not loose without Gandhian thought. As Gandhiji says, non-violence is not cowardice. It is a work of courage, a moment to show off. When it comes to responding with violence on the one hand and deciding not to resort to violence on the other, a double adventure is needed. It is the good fortune of the world that such ventures are still taking place on the path of Gandhichindhya for equality, peace and justice.
