Yashji's skills took my music to a different level : Uttam Singh
It has been 25 years since the release of the film 'Dil Toh Pagal Hai' (1997). Music composer Uttam Singh has not only talked about the music of the film, but also reminisced about the experience of working with director Yash Chopra and singer Lata Mangeshkar.
How did you get selected to compose the music for this film?- Answering this question, Uttam Singh says, When I started working on the songs, it wasn't for 'Dil Toh Pagal Hai'. Those songs were for a TV project of Yashji's production house. I composed many new tunes and kept putting them in different parts of the film. This music belongs to my film, he said after a long time.'
Were you happy with the way the songs turned out? Uttam Singh says, 'Creating a new voice was my passion and this film gave me a platform to take it forward. The way the songs were portrayed was originally cool. Yashji's expertise took my music to a different level.'
What is your favorite song in the film? Uttam Singh says, 'I would play 'Are Re Are' at the end of every meeting. I did it for six months, but nobody else really liked it. One day Yash Chopra's son Uday Chopra heard the song and liked it, then everyone's perception about the song changed. When it came to writing the song, lyricist Anand Bakshisaheb heard the tune and immediately went to the washroom. I thought he didn't like the tune, but when it came out, he said, 'Are re ye kyan hua, mainne na ye jaana..' The song was so loved that it was played throughout the film. The film's music was a mix of modern and old school. I recorded the song with 150 musicians. I could record the flute on the synthesizer, but I called a flutist from Chennai to record it. There was a balance between acoustic and electronic sounds.'
Why are most of your songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar? Uttam Singh says, 'Latadidi had the ability to do justice to any style. Hence, he sang most of the songs to him. Ashaji sang 'Ae Dil Le Gayi..' and Harihar sang the title song 'Ek Dooje Ke Vaste..'.
The very perspective of watching dance has changed: a calming atmosphere
It has been 25 years since Shamak Davar also entered Bollywood with 'Dil To Pagal Hai'. The choreographer says that the impact of the film is still being seen in the industry. "I never thought that this film would change the way we look at dance, I didn't even know then," said Davar.
'Maas had an impact as a choreographer with this film,' adds Shamak Davar, talking about his experience working with Madhuri and Karishma, 'Madhuri also had her strengths. So was the charisma. Everyone has shown their talent in cinema and that's why it was successful. In fact, my dancers and Shahrukh played football in between shooting the song.'
Davar feels that while the film has set a new trend. Still reflected in the industry when it comes to dance. This film started a trend. I am happy to be there to start it.
